A seven-year-old Malaysian boy was sent to a hospital yesterday, to remove a leech which had entered his anus while he was fishing at a swamp near his house in Kampung Paya Rambai here.

He said that he immediately told his parents before he was rushed to the Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II.

Mohd Farhan Adli, a pupil of Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Chengal, Kerteh will be discharged from the hospital after the leech is removed in the next two days.

Earlier today, Datin Seri Khamarzan Ahmed Meah, wife of International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, visited him at the hospital.

A patient at a Swedish psychiatric ward in Helsingborg, in the south of Sweden, recently died after swallowing two surgical implements while visiting the Växjö hospital Centrallasarettet.

The woman, who has a history of swallowing sharp implements such as razorblades and knives, had been treated for several years at the open clinic in Helsingborg.

During what appears to be a mystery visit to Växjö, the woman visited Centrallasarettet where she reportedly got hold of the two surgical implements.

When staff at the hospital found out what she had done, she was rushed into surgery, but when the surgeon tried to remove the second scalpel from the woman’s throat, it damaged her oesophagus and blood vessels in her throat so badly that she died on the operating table.

Doctors at the Hanoi-based Central Dermatology Hospital are curing a little girl who suffers from the so-called “vampire” disease.

Dr. Nguyen Duy Hung, Secretary General of the Vietnam Dermatology Association, said that the patient is only five years old and she comes from Soc Son district, Hanoi.

The patient was hospitalised over a month ago, with acute wounds on her skin.

There are hundreds of blisters, with liquid inside, and scars on the girl’s body, particularly on exposed parts like face, neck, arms and legs.

The skin that is covered by clothing looks normal. These scars have deformed the girl’s face, arms and legs. Her fingernails and toes are atrophied because of scars.

The patient is also very hairy and she does not develop normally.

She is only 13 kilos in weight and has anaemia.

Doctors made a lot of tests and diagnosed that the girl contracted a rare innate disease called Porphyrin syndrome. This is a genetic disease.

According to Dr. Hung, this disease is uncommon in the world, with around 200 cases recorded worldwide so far.

The doctor says that this disease is also called “vampire” disease because the skin of patients gets injured when it touches sunlight, leaving terrifying scars and atrophied limbs.

Dr. Hung adds that there is no measure to treat this disease to the very roots. Doctors can help deal with anaemia and skin wounds, and in some cases they can perform bone marrow transplant.

The doctor says that this is the first “vampire” patient treated at the Central Dermatology Hospital, or perhaps the first in Vietnam.

She has now left hospital but the family and the hospital has maintained communications and she will be will be examined periodically.

A frail British pensioner wearing a knitted beret was ordered out of a pub in Sheffield for flouting its ‘no hat’ policy to keep out football hooligans.

Great-grandmother Hilda Nelson lost her hair while fighting for life in hospital and wears the hat to cover her head.

She had been taken out by her family to celebrate her 89th birthday when staff at The Park Hotel in Hillsborough asked her to remove it.

Hilda said at first she thought they were joking – until the pub manager told the whole party to leave if the OAP refused.

The group included her 83-year-old partner Peter Fisher and Eric Ramsden, 74, who uses crutches after a hip operation.

“The pub doesn’t like football fans wearing hats, but we hardly look like hooligans,” Hilda said. “I couldn’t believe it at first – in fact I laughed when they asked me to remove my hat the first time because I thought they were joking.”

Hilda said she lost her hair after weeks spent in hospital last year.

“I wear the hat when I go out because of the terrible condition my hair is in – lying in a hospital bed all day made it all break off,” she said.

“I am waiting for my hair to grow back and I have to cover it up when I leave the house. But what if I had lost my hair through cancer? Would they still have made me take my hat off? I just think the way they treated us is so silly.”

Her family have demanded an apology from the pub, and said staff should use their discretion when enforcing the ‘no hat’ policy.

A spokesman for the pub, owned by the Mitchells and Butlers chain, said: “We’d like to offer our sincere apologies to Mrs Nelson and her family for the way in which this situation was handled, and for the embarrassment it caused. We do ask customers to remove headwear in the pub. However our staff should have used their discretion on this occasion.”

A Brazilian actor playing Judas was seriously injured on Saturday when he accidentally hanged himself during a Bible scene in which his character commits suicide after betraying Jesus.

The actor, identified as Tiago Klimeck, apparently confused which cord he should use, and remained hanging for several minutes during a performance of “The Passion of Christ” in the city of Itarare.

The man’s colleagues did not react immediately while he hung unconscious, believing the actor was still playing the role of Judas.

Klimeck was rushed to a hospital, where he remains in serious condition.

Back in 2008, a vicar had a rather strange ‘accident’.

The 50-yeaar-old clergyman told medical staff at Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital that the accident was definitely not due to a sex game.

He had to undergo surgery to extract the spud from his backside.

A&E nurse Trudi Watson said: ‘He explained to me, quite sincerely, he had been hanging curtains naked in he kitchen when he fell backwards on to the kitchen table and on to a potato.

‘But it’s not for me to question his story.’

She went on to reveal other objects removed from people’s rectums, including a cucumber, a Russian doll and a carnation.

It is unknown why this story is so popular again 4 years later!
