On Tuesday, Jonaya Peterson was almost run over by a suspected drunken driver inside a Connecticut convenience store.

The Waterbury woman shared her frightening ordeal.

“I just heard a loud boom and it just happened so fast, I had no time to react to that,” she said.

She was standing at the counter inside the 7-Eleven on Cooke Street on Monday night when a black Ford Explorer slammed into the store, and almost ran her over. There was no way to prepare for what happened.

“Very shocking. I didn’t know what to do. I was just standing there. It was so unreal,” Peterson said.

Surveillance cameras inside the store captured the scare. Peterson didn’t know how close of a call it actually was until she saw the dramatic images.

“Oh my gosh!” she exclaimed. Peterson said she actually planned to check out at the register, where the car eventually crashed, and changed her mind at the last second.

“I think I’m very lucky. My angels were looking over me because, after seeing that video – it’s hard to watch,” she said.

Peterson was buying a lottery ticket when Kennedy Dowdell ploughed through the glass and struck Peterson in the back, police said.

“I just know I felt that sharp pain, and I got pushed against the register,” she said.

Then she noticed the threat wasn’t over, so she jumped on the counter to get out of harm’s way.

Dowdell put the car in reverse, backed out of the store and fled, according to police.

“I’m pretty mad because, never in a million years would I imagine that would happen to me,” Peterson said.

Waterbury Police tracked down Dowdell a short time later on Hill Street after a store clerk recognized him.

When police asked Dowdell to take a sobriety test he said, “I ain’t taking no test. I’m drunk and I know I will fail the test,” according to court documents.

Dowdell faced a judge in Waterbury on Tuesday about the charges of third-degree assault, operating under the influence and other charges.

“Within the last year, he (Dowdell) just got back from serving two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. What you’re going to see here is young men make mistakes,” his attorney, Donald Papcsy, said.

A Virginia college student is suing his fraternity after a fellow frat boy allegedly got drunk and shot bottle rockets out of his anus.

This action caused the startled Louis Helmburg III to fall off a balcony.

Helmburg is suing the the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, as well as member Travis Hughes, over drunken misadventures that allegedly occurred at a frat party on May 1, 2011.

“Defendant Hughes was highly intoxicated on this date and time, and decided in a drunken stupor that it would be a good idea to shoot bottle rockets out of his anus on the ATO deck,” reads the lawsuit.

“Defendant Hughes placed a bottle rocket in his anus, ignited the fuse, but instead of launching, the bottle rocket blew up in the defendant’s rectum, and startled this plaintiff and caused him to jump back, at which time he fell off the ATO deck, and he became lodged between the deck and an air conditioner unit.”

Hughes was underage at the time, and the statement argues “the activity of drinking underage and firing bottle rockets out of one’s own anus constitutes an ‘ultra hazardous’ activity.”

The lawsuit also notes the deck, which is “under the exclusive custody, maintenance and control of the ATO” had no railing.

Helmburg is suing for loss of time on the college baseball team, medical bills, loss of earning capacity and other damages.

Statements of claim contain unproven allegations.

Washington state cops said that a drunken sailor entered the wrong apartment and climbed into bed.

Unfortunately there was an 80-year-old woman in the bed at the time.

Dalton Pierson, 21, left a friend’s Bremerton apartment early Sunday after consuming alcohol and when he returned, he walked into the wrong apartment. He was later seen urinating on the floor by John Jaeger, 56.

Jaeger told The Kitsap County Sheriff’s deputies that he heard his mother cry out as he dialed 911.

Evelyn Whitney said she was awakened by Pierson climbing into bed with her.

Deputies said they arrived and awoke Pierson to find he was “visibly intoxicated” and didn’t realize he was in the wrong apartment.

Pierson, who is stationed at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor, was released to his friends. Deputies said Whitney’s apartment is nearly identical in layout to that of Pierson’s friend and the door had been left unlocked.

Whitney said Pierson’s supervising officer “made him sit down and listen while I scolded him.

“After that, I felt much better.”

He is unlikely to face charges.

A three-year-old Scottish boy dialled 999 for help after his drunk babysitter consumed more than a bottle of wine.

The boy was so concerned about Jacqueline Campbell’s condition that he managed to call the emergency services. He used Campbell’s mobile phone to report her to the police and was able to open the door to the officers when they arrived after midnight.

Perth Sheriff Court was told on Thursday that Campbell was “clearly drunk” but she confirmed to the police that it had been the toddler who had called them for help.

Fiscal depute Carol Whyte said: “At half past midnight police attended in response to a 999 call they had received. The accused said it was the boy who had made the telephone call.”

The court was told that 40-year-old Campbell had drunk more than a bottle of wine and became aggressive towards the officers who arrived.

Ms Whyte added: “The police gave suggestions and advice to the accused and at that she picked up a glass from the kitchen and threw it towards PC Strawson. The glass hit the ground beside the officer and smashed.”

Campbell, from Perth, admitted assaulting PC Isobel Strawson by throwing a glass at her at Kenmore Street, Aberfeldy, Perthshire, on October 16, 2010.

Solicitor Paul Ralph, defending, said Campbell had previously been a talented golfer but her life had spiralled out of control and she sometimes went to “dark places”.

Sheriff Lindsay Foulis told Campbell: “You clearly have issues. If you offend further you are limiting the options I, or any of my colleagues, have with regard to sentence.”

He placed her on probation for 18 months and ordered her to undertake drug and alcohol counselling, as well as getting psychiatric treatment if required.

A woman from Winnipeg somehow survived being shot through the eye in a New Year’s Eve attack that claimed the life of her friend.

Police and paramedics arrived inside the Selkirk Avenue home in the early hours of Dec. 31 to find the woman calmly sitting in a chair.

“It was like she was oblivious to what had happened. She didn’t want any treatment until after she finished her beer,” a source told reporters.

The woman was severely impaired, either by drugs or alcohol or both, and seemed to be showing no discomfort despite the obvious injury she suffered. There were as many as 10 other people in the home, also in various states of impairment.

The body of 46-year-old Michael Warren Sinclair was found inside the same room. He was pronounced dead at hospital.

Sources say the woman remains in hospital for her injuries but is listed in stable condition.

One of Sinclair’s relatives said her brother was not linked to gangs.

Neighbours said the two-storey house was known as a gathering place for drug users and partiers.
