North Florida police say that a man was killed when a trash bin struck him in a bizarre crash at a grocery store parking lot.

Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office spokesman J.C. Hurst said that an 18-year-old swerved to miss a Winn-Dixie employee who was emptying the trash about 7 p.m. Saturday.

His vehicle hit a trash bin and then sideswiped another vehicle. The trash bin then struck 68-year-old Harry Collins who was standing nearby.

Collins was tossed into the air. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The store employee received minor injuries and was taken to a hospital.

Collins’ sister, Brenda Blalock, said her brother was there looking for food scraps to feed a few stray foxes that had made his backyard their home.

Witnesses said that the driver was showing off and driving recklessly.

“He was just trying to show off, but he didn’t intentionally try to hurt someone,” said Brandon Tedesca, the driver’s friend. “He’s lucky he didn’t get hurt himself.”

The driver tried CPR, but to no avail.

Collins’ sister said she is still waiting for more information and answers on the crash.

“Accidents happen, I just want to know why, that’s it,” Blalock said. “God always wants you to forgive.”

The family said they will be able to forgive the driver responsible.

Charges against the driver are pending. Police have not release the names of the driver.

UPDATE:

“It’s very unfortunate. I’m very sorry about the whole situation,” said the teen, whose family did not want him to be identified for his own safety.

He said he wanted to give his side of the story to clear up the rumors that have been circulating about what happened.

The high school senior, who’s already enlisted to join the Marines after graduation, said Saturday’s crash at the shopping center on Argyle Forest Boulevard on the Westside was a freak accident. It was initially believed he was showing off and purposely speeding through the alley in his 1991 Chevy Camaro before the crash. He said that’s not the case at all.

“I did not try to race or show off. I was actually going to Domino’s pizza,” he said.

The teen said that while driving with a friend, his throttle got stuck and the car kept speeding up. He said he pressed on the brake but couldn’t stop. He said he also pulled the emergency brake to no avail.

“The whole time I’m swerving around,” he said. “There was a pickup truck and I swerved around the pickup truck, and I realized my car was headed towards the building. So I swerved back and I saw the employee and I had to swerve again. It was either hit the employee or hit the Dumpster.”

The teen said that as part of a chain reaction, one of the Dumpsters crashed into the 19-year-old employee, Blake Sercu.

“All I heard was the noise,” Sercu said. “All the sudden, everything’s flying at me. I just immediately tried to turn around and dodge it all, but it all caught up to me.”

Then, according to the driver, another Dumpster hit Harry Collins, a retired Vietnam veteran and father of four.

“I never meant to hurt anybody,” the 18-year-old said. “I mean, if I knew he was in the Dumpster, I probably would have swerved into the building.”

The driver is adamant that all this happened because his car malfunctioned. He said it had just gotten out of an auto shop about a week ago.

But until the investigation’s over, “I don’t want to point any fingers as of now at anybody,” the teen said.

No charges have been filed.

Blalock said she’s been in contact with the driver and said she forgives him no matter what happened. She said he’s welcome at Collins’ funeral.
