Yes you read that correctly! The Swedish medical community is increasingly turning to the unothodox method as a last resort treatment for those infected with superbugs.
What they discovered is that if you get the faeces from a healthy person, add water and then give the infected person an enema with the solution, the infected person gets better. They have to keep the solution ‘inside’ for about 30 minutes at a time, before it is ‘released’ and the bowel then rinsed with another enema.
“Their first reaction is that it sounds disgusting and unpleasant to get another person’s poop put into them,” Physician Per Dahl of the infection clinic in Växjö in southern Sweden said.
Although only performed a handful of times, the method is becoming a more common feature of Swedish healthcare as cases of resistant bacteria increase.
Researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm are hopeful that they can use bacteria extracted from health faecal matter to develop new medicines to tackle the growing problem of resistant bacteria.
